The problem
When a baby starts on solid food, parents ask the same questions every day: what can my baby eat at this age, what do I cook today, and is it enough? The good recipes are spread over English-language sites, and few of them show nutrition or say which age they suit.
What we built
Receta Bebesh, a mobile app for Albanian-speaking parents. Recipes are filtered by age, and the filter adds up: at eight months you also see everything that suits six months. Each recipe shows its ingredients, steps and nutrition: calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat and fibre.
A daily journal adds up what the baby ate as meals are marked as cooked. Learning cards cover topics such as allergens, texture by age and iron-rich foods. Point the camera at food and the app names it, estimates its nutrition and suggests matching recipes. Parents can also photograph a recipe, check the text the app reads from it, and share it with other users.
How we built it
React Native with Expo and TypeScript, so one codebase runs on iOS and Android. Firebase handles sign-in, including Sign in with Apple, and stores the recipes. An import script collects recipes from two sites, translates them, cleans up ingredients and steps, and has Gemini estimate the nutrition. Gemini Vision reads food photos and recipe photos in the app. Tests run with Jest.
The result
More than 210 recipes in Albanian, each with its nutrition, and an app that answers what to cook today for a baby of this age.
